Today, urban expansion has transformed the flower fields into a maze of dense residential alleys, but the village soul remains intact—alongside a striking, preserved relic of the Vietnam War: the wreckage of a downed American B-52 bomber in Huu Tiep Lake.

The Green Heritage of Ngọc Hà

Historically, Ngoc Ha was a beautiful landscape of flower gardens, ponds, and traditional wooden houses. The village supplied roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, and jasmines to the markets of Hanoi.

As the city grew, the fields were paved over, and the village became a residential zone. However, if you know where to look, the agricultural heritage is still visible.

Many residents maintain beautiful gardens on their rooftops and balconies, filling the narrow lanes with green foliage and flowers. The neighborhood also retains its historic village market, where vendors set up baskets of fresh produce, herbs, and flowers along the sides of the alleys, creating a vibrant, local atmosphere that feels distinct from the commercial Old Quarter.

Huu Tiep Lake: A Silent Witness to History

Deep within the residential maze of Ngoc Ha lies a small, quiet pond called Hồ Hữu Tiệp (Huu Tiep Lake). Protruding from the center of the dark water is a rusted piece of metal: the landing gear and wing structure of a US Air Force B-52 bomber.

The bomber was shot down during the intense "Christmas Bombings" of Operation Linebacker II in December 1972, crashing directly into the village pond. Rather than removing the wreckage, the citizens of Hanoi preserved it exactly where it landed, creating a powerful, local memorial.

Today, the pond is surrounded by quiet cafes, a primary school, and residential houses. Watching children play and locals sip tea next to a war relic is a surreal, powerful experience that shows the resilience and peaceful recovery of Hanoi.
